Bridal Kaftan: The Henna Ceremony Explained

Before the big celebration comes the henna ceremony. This intimate and joyful ceremony is one of the most meaningful moments in Moroccan and Middle Eastern weddings. Here’s what it means, how it unfolds, and the ideal outfit for the bride.

What is the henna ceremony?

The henna evening (or “henna night”) traditionally precedes the wedding. During this ceremony, henna designs—symbols of good luck, protection, and fertility—are applied to the bride’s hands and feet. It is a women’s gathering, passed down from generation to generation, filled with songs, music, and blessings.

Powerful symbolism

Henna is more than just a decoration. Traditionally, its color and how long it lasts are seen as signs of good fortune for the couple. The ceremony also marks the young woman’s transition to her new status as a bride, surrounded by the women of her family.

What should the bride wear on the night of the henna ceremony?

Since a henna ceremony is a more intimate affair than a big party, the outfit should be elegant yet comfortable—you’ll be sitting for a long time while the henna is being applied. Traditionally, people choose a green outfit (a color associated with good luck and henna), but the rules have become more flexible.

A bridal kaftan made of flowing fabric or a takchita with gold embroidery are perfect choices. Avoid sleeves that are too tight or constricting at the wrists, so as not to interfere with the henna application and to protect your outfit.

Our Outfit Tips

  • Choose a lightweight, breathable fabric: it's going to be a long, lively evening.
  • Make sure the sleeves can be rolled up easily.
  • Choose a color that contrasts with the henna to make it stand out in photos.
  • Save your most precious outfit (with embroidery and delicate beads) for the big night, and choose an elegant but less delicate outfit for the henna ceremony.

What about guests and family?

Henna night is not just for the bride: sisters, cousins and friends take part too, often in colourful outfits. The idea is to choose a comfortable piece you can sit in for a long time, dance in and have henna applied in. Bright pieces fit right in: our pink sequin kaftan or the royal blue sequinned silk lamé kaftan, both finished with sfifa and aâkad buttons, bring the sparkle of the celebration. For a lighter look, the lilac organza kaftan with mandarin collar is a good choice.

To complete the look, an oriental braided belt defines the waist and a few pieces of gold jewellery add a festive touch. For more ideas, read our guide what to wear to an oriental wedding as a guest.

A Tradition That's Being Reinvented

Today, many brides personalize their henna night: different colors, multiple outfit changes, and themed decorations. What matters most is the spirit of the occasion: to celebrate, to pass on traditions, and to surround the bride with love.

Frequently asked questions

When does the henna ceremony take place?

Traditionally, henna night takes place before the wedding. It is an intimate gathering of the women of the family and close friends, where henna patterns are applied to the bride's hands and feet.

What colour should you wear for henna night?

Green is the traditional colour, associated with luck and with henna. The codes have relaxed, though: you can choose other shades, ideally one that contrasts with the henna in photos.

What should a guest wear to henna night?

A colourful, comfortable outfit: a light kaftan or a bright sequinned or lamé piece. Keep sleeves that are easy to roll up if you are having henna applied.

Which sleeves work best for henna night?

Avoid sleeves that are too fitted or tight at the wrists. Wide sleeves that are easy to roll up do not get in the way of the henna and keep your outfit free of stains.
