Kaftan or takchita: what's the difference?

A common question before buying. The kaftan is a one-piece, flowing full-length robe worn on its own. The takchita is made of two pieces: an under-dress (the tahtia) covered by an open over-robe (the dfina), drawn together by an ornate belt (the mdamma). As a rule, the kaftan suits everyday wear and evenings, while the more ceremonial takchita is reserved for weddings and grand occasions. Both share the same Moroccan heritage and the same artisanal finishes.

How to choose your kaftan

Three things guide the right choice:

• The occasion: an embroidered, structured kaftan for a ceremony or wedding; a lighter, cleaner style for an evening or everyday wear.
• The fabric: silk and satin for a fluid, luminous drape; brocade and lamé for a rich, structured look; organza and chiffon for the lightness of a summer wedding.
• The cut and colour: deep tones (emerald, royal blue, burgundy) dress a silhouette for the evening; light, luminous shades suit daytime ceremonies. A belt defines the waist and shapes the silhouette.

Our kaftans are finished using the traditional techniques of Moroccan craftsmanship: sfifa, a hand-sewn braided trim that borders the openings, and aâkad buttons, knotted one by one. These finishes, the signatures of an authentic Moroccan kaftan, are made in our atelier in Morocco and passed down from generation to generation.
