Eastern or Western Wedding Dress: How to Choose (or Both)?
More and more brides no longer want to choose: they dream of having both a Western wedding dress AND an Eastern-style outfit for their big day. The good news is, the two aren't mutually exclusive—they complement each other. Here's how to find the balance that's right for you.
Two traditions, two moments
At many weddings, the day is divided into several parts. The Western wedding dress—white, structured, often in a princess or mermaid style—is the centerpiece of the ceremony. The Eastern outfit, on the other hand, adds a touch of elegance to the evening or the henna ceremony. As a result, many brides wear several outfits in a single day.
The Western Wedding Dress: Timeless
Lace, tulle, satin, strapless, or long-sleeved: Western-style wedding dresses emphasize structure and the purity of white. They are the classic choice for civil or religious ceremonies. At Selhyan, we offer both wedding dresses in this style and custom-made pieces.
The Bridal Kaftan: Oriental Radiance
The bridal caftan features embroidery, beads, luxurious fabrics, and sometimes color. It embodies tradition and makes for a spectacular entrance at the evening reception. The takchita, which is even more ceremonial, is a classic staple of Moroccan weddings.
Do we really have to choose?
Not necessarily. There are three possible approaches:
- The classic combination: a white dress for the ceremony, and a caftan or takchita for the evening.
- A fusion of styles: a wedding dress with Eastern-inspired details (embroidery, an intricately designed belt) that brings together two distinct worlds in a single garment.
- All things Eastern: several caftans in different colors to add variety to your day.
How do I decide?
Ask yourself three questions: How many different parts does your wedding consist of? What is your budget for outfits? And most importantly, in which outfit do you feel most like yourself? There’s no wrong answer—only the one that’s right for you.
