Quelle tenue porter pour un mariage oriental quand on est invitée ?

What should you wear to a Middle Eastern wedding if you're a guest?

Being invited to a Middle Eastern wedding is the perfect opportunity to wear an outfit with personality. But caught between the desire to stand out and the fear of going overboard (or not doing enough), many women are unsure what to wear. Should you wear a caftan? A takchita? Or a more understated dress? Here’s our guide to help you choose with confidence.

Understanding the Dress Code for a Middle Eastern Wedding

Moroccan and Middle Eastern weddings are often more formal than Western weddings. Tradition emphasizes beautiful fabrics, colors, and intricate details. As a guest, you can therefore dress elegantly: a caftan or a takchita are perfectly appropriate, even if you are not a close family member.

The golden rule: let the bride shine first. Avoid pure white, and also avoid “outshining” the bride with an outfit that’s too flashy if you know she’ll be wearing a simple caftan herself.

The caftan: a guest's go-to choice

The caftan is undoubtedly the simplest and most elegant choice. Flowing, comfortable, and available in an endless variety of colors and fabrics, it flatters every body type. For a guest, opt for a guest caftan made of a flowing fabric like silk chiffon or organza, with elegant details (such as a sfifa or an embroidered belt).

When it comes to colors, anything goes depending on the season: jewel tones (emerald, sapphire blue, burgundy) in winter, and bright hues and gradients in spring.

The takchita: for the most formal ceremonies

If the wedding is very formal or if you are a close relative, the takchita—which consists of two pieces and a belt (mdamma)—adds an even more ceremonial touch. It’s an ideal choice for the wedding evening or the main reception.

Choose an Outfit That Fits the Occasion

The Henna Ceremony

More intimate and cozy, it’s perfect for colorful, comfortable outfits. A lightweight caftan is ideal.

The Big Night

It's time to break out your most elegant piece: luxurious fabrics, embroidery, and a statement belt.

Our Practical Tips

  • Choose a fabric that's appropriate for the season and the length of the party (Middle Eastern parties go on for a long time, so prioritize comfort).
  • Don't forget the accessories: an embroidered belt or gold jewelry can really make a solid-color caftan stand out.
  • If you're unsure about the dress code, check with the family: it varies from one wedding to another.
